Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo on Monday declared his intention to run for the country’s presidential elections to be held in February 2023.
The 65-year-old former Senior University law lecturer could replace president Buhari as a flag bearer for the All-Progressive Party.
This may depend on his chances of winning the internal polls against other strong party stalwarts.
Vice President Osinbajo in his address at a launch of his bid to take over the flagbearer post and eventually succeed his boss as President noted that, with his years of experience at the presidency, he stands tall among any other candidate and remains the best bet for the APC party’s victory in next years’ elections.
He added that ” which is why, I am, with utmost humility, formally declaring my intention to run for the office of the President- On the platform of our great party, the All-Progressives Congress. ”
Few hours after declaring his intent, Osinbajo’s bid met a stiffer opposition from the former governor of Lagos, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, an influential figure in the APC who met with the party’s governors to galvanize supporter for his ambition to replace President Buhari.
He told reporters that his mission is to ” seek the collaboration, encouragement and support of my party for my ambition and mission to become the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Meanwhile, Transport Minister and a former governor of River State, Rotimi Amaechi had also declared his intention over the weekends to run for the top-notch position in APC party.
All political parties in Nigeria are expected to elect and submit the names of their presidential candidates in the early days of June.
