Local reports suggest Senegalese leaders have plans to regulate social media in the West African country.
President Macky Sall’s commitments on the subject during a meeting with union leaders revealed Senegal has plans to formulate laws to regulate the modern communication tool.
It is alleged that President Macky Sall during the meeting described social media abuse as a “cancer of the modern world”.

Macky Sall’s comments follows the increased use of social media platforms as means to protest against certain govvernment actions by the opposition party.
In March 2021, Senegalese opposition leader was arrested on allegations of rape.
Ousmane Sonko’s arrest sparked mass protests across the country.
The opposition party heavily resorted to the use of social media in reaching out and mobilizing its supporters.
Authorities said the opposition incited the crowd into rioting through the use of the social media.
In the local and municipal elections that followed, the opposition won in major cities of filling government.
As rumors of Ousmane Sonko bid circulates, the opposition party is likely to pull lots of surprises in the coming legislative and the 2024 presidential elections.
