The Federal Ministry of Environment has inaugurated a steering committee to coordinate the country’s activities towards achieving net-zero carbon emission.
The West African oil giant tasked newly inaugurated committee to restructure the country’s initial 2050 vision into Long Term Low Emission Strategy for 2060.
The Federal Ministry of Environment launched the steering committee on Thursday, May 12, 2022, in the Nigerian capital- Abuja.
Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Environment, Hassan Musa said the inauguration of the committee is in fulfillment of the president’s COP26 promise.
Hassan Musa explained that President Mohammadu Buhari speaking at COP26 in Glasgow announced commitment to achieving net- zero greenhouse carbon (gas) emissions by 2060.
He added that the President on this note signed the five-year climate emission budgets bill into law.
The new law is to help achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions between 2050 and 2070.
The permanent secretary hints that the Long Term Strategies comes with many additional benefits.
He cited moderate investments cost in high-emission technologies, equitable transitions support and innovative technology promotion as benefits.

He said the strategies also facilitates planning for sustainable future climate risk infrastructure
Touching on global warming, the secretary pointed that climate change has now come to stay and its devastating impact is now a global reality.
He observed that climate change is no longer ordinary environmental perception but scientifically proven socio-economic and political subject.
“There is however affordable solutions available to enable us turn Climate Change into opportunities.
Let’s take advantage and leap to cleaner, more resilient economies and societies”, he stressed.
Hassan Musa entreated members of the steering committee to work in harmony with the LT-LEDS and the Energy Transition Plan.
He also urged the committee to coordinate strategies to match those of key Ministries, Department and Agencies responsible for the initiative.
