The 2022 edition of the Global Handwashing Day celebration in Ghana is scheduled to take place at the Kumasi City Market (former Kejetia market) in the Ashanti region.

A number of stakeholder engagements are underway to ensure that traders in the Kumasi Kejetia market centre, especially women fully participated in the upcoming programme.

The Community Water and Sanitation Agency (CWSA) under the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources is leading the WASH sector for the national celebration.

Management of CWSA have initiated a number of activities to encourage and motivate market women in the country’s biggest market to fully participate in the celebration.

As part of the preparation towards the event, market queens have been taken through orientation by Church of Christ in Kumasi ahead of the event.
Speaking at the orientation programme, head of extension services at the CWSA, Mrs. Theodora Adomako-Adjei expressed hope that the coming event will create the needed awareness on effective handwashing as the best way to prevent communicable diseases.

She pointed out that the Global Handwashing Day provides a platform for advocacy and actions towards increased access to handwashing facilities and public education.

She also stressed the need for entire household to master the practice of handwashing with soap and under clean running water.

“Handwashing is important to achieve benefits beyond disease reduction. It ensures enhanced dignity and general wellbeing.

As we prepare towards the commemoration of this year’s Global Handwashing Day, remember handwashing with soap is just not for the prevention of COVID-19,” she emphasized.

Mrs. Adomako-Adjei expressed gratitude to GAMA, UNICEF, the Church of Christ, and WaterAid Ghana for their support towards the event.
