The 2003-year batch of the Yaa Asantewaa Girls Senior High School (YAGSS Adehyee 2003) has launched its 20th anniversary celebration scheduled for November this year.
The ‘’Adehyee 2003’’ as YAGSS Old students are called used the occasion to cut sod for the construction of a befitting 10-seater Water Closet (WC)toilet with Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) facility for the school.
Chairperson of the Adehyee 2003 Anniversary committee Rhoda Agyei Boateng led the group to cut sod for the commencement of the Legacy Project.
Speaking with the media after the sod cutting ceremony, Rhoda Agyei Boateng said the 2003 Adehyee named the project Legacy Project since they felt obliged to leave behind something that will impact positively on the lives of the young ones.
She said after leaving the school some two decades ago, they saw the need to come back and give back to their alma matter.
‘’After having passed through this great institution from 2001 till completion in 2003, we value and appreciate the great impact that the school has had on our lives and that of our families. We therefore saw it wise appropriate to come home and give something back to our school,” she pointed out.
The group said they found out that the school needed help in terms of infrastructure and therefore decided to contribute and initiate something as part of the year group’s 20th anniversary activities.
They said upon enquiries, they were informed that their younger sisters in a newly constructed dormitory block, house 8 lacked WASH facilities such as toilet facilities, bath house and water for proper sanitation and hygiene.
Leadership of the group said as ladies and mothers they know the importance of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene hence the decision to construct the toilet and borehole for WASH activities in the school.
The Legacy Project which estimated to cost the year group about 300,000 Ghana Cedis will serve students in the school’s newly constructed dormitory block, House 8 in particular and the school as a whole.
Rhoda Agyei Boateng disclosed that the committee is much committed to the project considering the importance of WASH to the girl child in particular and society in general.
She also indicated that the project would commence immediately after the sod cutting and expected to be completed before the main anniversary in November.
The legacy project consists of a 10-seater Water Closet, a changing room for menstrual hygiene, mechanized borehole among other sanitary facilities for the adolescent girl and girls with special needs.
The project is expected to be completed before 11 November when the main anniversary is scheduled to take place to be commissioned and handover for use.
