The Head of all Queen Mothers of various item traders in the Asante Kingdom has appealed to traders in markets and streets across the kingdom to consider revisiting the not so old practice of serving locally cooked dishes and foods in natural leaves instead of wrapping them in rubber and plastic bags.
According to the Asantehemaaa’s chief representative of queen mother traders, revisiting the traditional means of serving dishes outside the home will bring many positive economic and health benefits to the residents in the kingdom in particular and the country in general.
Nana Yaa Fowaa who doubles as the queen mother of all yam traders in Asante made the appeal in respect to this year’s global call to “Beat Plastic Ploutonion” on World Environment Day.
Nana Fowaa educated that serving dishes in leaves such as plantain and green water lilly leaves will reduce the use of rubber and plastics which is polluting our natural environment.
She added that apart from the harm that these plastics cause to the natural environment, it also comes with many negative health hazards.
The Queen Mother warmed that the country will in the near future lose all its valuable ecosystems if citizens continue the wanton use of rubber material in domestic trade activities.
Nana Yaa Fowaa called on stakeholders especially the media to intensify public education and awareness creation on the harmful effect of rubber and polythene bags and the need to minimize its usage.
