The government of Ghana under the auspices of the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources has secured funding through the World Bank’s GH- GAMA Sanitation and water Project to improve access to quality water and sanitation in the country’s second largest city, Kumasi.
This was announced by the sector Minister Cecilia Abena Dapaah at the 2021 Mole XXXII Conference in Kumasi.
The Minster said the Kumasi initiative is an extension of the Greater Accra Metropolitan Assembly Sanitation and Water Project (GAMA-SWP) which is targeted to providing over 34,496 households in low-income earning communities within the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area (GAMA) with improved sanitation and water supply.
She said the project aims at providing 260 schools in the target communities with disability friendly, fit-for-purpose and gender sensitive institutional sanitation facilities within GAMA to help reduce open defecation and address other sanitation constrains.
Madam Abena Dapaah disclosed that the project has also facilitated the construction of a 51 km sewer line and wastewater treatment plants at Ashaiman, Bankuman and a similar one in Kumasi.
The Sanitation Minster said the government is equally committed to addressing the water and sanitation challenges of the rural poor. She noted that several Rural Water and Sanitation projects have been initiated across the rural set ups to address the challenges some of which have been completed and commissioned.
She pointed that the current administration is very much committed is to collaborating with WASH players to achieving the Sustainable Development goals on water and sanitation by 2030.
Madam Abena Dapah said her ministry and government acknowledge the vast gap between the urban rich and the rural poor and therefore stress the need for a stronger collaboration among stake holders especially the private sector.
